    My student's book has seventeen chapters. When trying to click on the table of contents desired chapter link, the link takes her to the end of the book. If I click on a previous chapter that works, and I scroll down to find the chapter, after a while the app changes screens and takes her to the end of the book. No matter what we do, there is no way to prevent this from happening. My student is blind, so it is extremely frustrating to not be able to follow the book until the end. I also bookmarked where she read last, and the bookmark takes her to the end of the book. Please fix this!

    Hello Dana, The Web Reader alone is pretty basic, and always begins reading at the top of a page. So if one wishes it to begin reading in a specific spot, you'll need to scroll until that area is focused at the top. Another option is to install the Read and Write extension, which will work when the book is opened. This tool does allow more control over what is read, and where it begins reading. If the members have access to a smartphone/tablet the free app Dolphin EasyReader has many more features that our members like.

    There has to be an easy way to pause a book while reading it on a Chromebook. I've attempted to use Capti but can't figure it out. HELP! I just want my students to be able to pause without it always starting at the top.

    Hi Kristine, Many of our reading tools are switch-compatible, including Web Reader and Read:OutLoud. Both programs have keyboard shortcuts to start and stop the Text to Speech. We recommend binding your switch to these keys for greater accessibility. In Web Reader, Alt + P starts and stops the TTS, while Ctrl + T controls the audio in Read:OutLoud. We recommend switch users install Voice Dream Reader (iOS or Android) or Read2Go (iOS) on their mobile devices.

  13. Hello- A student created a wish list/book requests on the Bookshare app. How can I, the school sponsor, see the student requests/wish lists? It seems odd that the student can create a list, but I am unable to view it. If relevant, I use the full version on a laptop. Thanks for the help!

    The same thing happened to me -- I keep getting the error message "Your Organization has reached the purchased download limit." Is there something I can do to fix this so I can assign books to students?

    Thanks for the reply. I’ve added a few contractions to the pronunciation list since my student using Dolphin is in 1st grade where they’re just learning about them. I don’t want to confuse him. I don’t have this issue with VoiceDream or Voice Writer but unfortunately the district hasn’t purchased those at this time.

    Hi Tammy, Unfortunately this is am ongoing issue with TTS in general. We constantly run into this issue across the board with our most popular apps such as Dolphin EasyReader, Voice Dream Reader etc. Certain apps can allow you to update, and change how words are pronounced though this feature is still very limited.

    Cannot delete books from reading list

    Hi Donna, Click on your reading list, and go to the Reading List where the title "Remove" should be listed under the Action Column. If the member wants a title assigned to them by a different sponsor removed then that sponsor will need to remove it from their Reading List.

    Does anyone else have issues with Dolphin EasyReader reading contractions? For some reason it isn’t reading them properly for example it would say ‘is’ ‘n’ ‘t’ in place of isn’t. So strange and I don’t recall having this issue before although perhaps I just didn’t notice it? Any suggestions for fixing this other than placing every contraction in pronunciation are greatly appreciated!

  23. Hello, I am not able to delete books that my student does not want to have on her account any longer. I have followed the directions but when I get to the reading list, there is no 'remove' button next to the title. Is there another way to do this? Thanks

    Hi Rhode, If the student or parent/guardian does not remember the email address associated with the account or password they can call or email Bookshare Customer Support to retrieve their login information.

    IEP vs. 504 Plan

    Hi Michelle, Yes, I'd suggest moving forward to help your student create an Individual account or adding him to the member roster for your school's organizational account. All Bookshare members must have a Chafee-qualifying print disability. Bookshare is regulated by copyright law, not educational law, so students with or without IEP or 504 plans may or may not automatically qualify for membership. The only caveat to this is with regards to whom can access NIMAC sourced titles vs. having to submit a book request online.

    Help w 15yo reluctant reader

    Hi Earline, I am an Assistive Technology Specialist and can share some information about how our students are accessing Bookshare in our school district. The most common way that we are using is via the Bookshare Web Browser on a Chromebook. The students then use the Read&Write for Google Chrome extension for the text-to-speech. (Text-to-Speech is included in the free version.) That way, the student can both see and hear the text as it is read aloud. At the beginning, I make it as easy as possible for both the teachers and students by adding the books, etc. and then try to encourage them to take more control of the account. I also like for the students to start with a book that they WANT to read instead of a book they HAVE to read. I hope this helps a bit! Michelle Thomas, Assistive Technology Specialist
