    NYT Best Sellers

The omission of the synopsis was an oversight and will be re-added in the very near future. However unfortunately due to some limitations in our lists the separation of fiction/non-fiction and children's is at this time a permanent change.

    Make communication with students friendlier

Hi Deborah, Unfortunately we have very limited funding for engineering time that allows us to make upgrades and changes such as these. Revamping the emails is definitely on our list as well as enhancing the process of managing a roster but I don't have any information yet on when we'll be able to push these items live.

    Renewing members

Hi Deborah, On the renewing front you don't have to actually renew them yourself, the students will receive emails starting at one month prior to their account expiring with instructions on how to update the account to renew it again for another year of free access, or if appropriate how to transition to a non-student account. But that said when you manage your students with standard tasks such as changing their grade level, with a few exceptions the system will take that as a renewal and also change their account such that it expires one year from that status change, which you effectively could use to mass renew them to all expire on the same date. Unfortunately as for the list of just OM members we do not yet have that feature in place, however I'll forward the request to our engineering and design team so that we can find an effective way to display that information to our sponsors. For now the workaround I can find is for just Organizational members their account type "Organizational" will also be a link. Members who have upgraded to the IM status this column will not be a link, which that difference may help distinguish those who have not yet upgraded.

    Summer reading

Hey Selvin, Summer reading is just some interesting books we think our members might find interesting. It's definitely not required.

Phew! Thanks for letting us know, we'll make a note of it in case others contact us with the same issue.

    voice dream reader

Hey Jennifer, That does sound very odd, I hate to say it but I recommend starting by uninstalling and reinstalling Voice Dream Reader. And if that doesn't help it might be best to contact their support directly, maybe they're experiencing a bug that we're unaware of.

Hi Jennifer, After enabling Bookshare it should ask you to log into your account, were you able to do this? Did it give any error messages when trying to sign in? If the device was previously used with Bookshare you may have to select an icon next to the switch to sign into your specific Bookshare account.

    Technical question

It's always possible in theory, but I do know of several schools that use a similar strategy for their mobile devices. Does your organization have any infrastructure in place that might block or limit access to ? If moving to a 3rd party neutral wifi network didn't solve the issue my only guess is possibly a local firewall app on the device itself? Of course doing a refresh on the device may also clear it up just in case somehow the install for Read2go was corrupted.

    Technical question

Hi Kristina, That's a very unusual error. Can you try two things for me, first log out of your Bookshare account and log back in. We had a recent issue with Read2Go that caused some saved account information to become corrupted after an iOS update that might solve this issue. If it does not can you try accessing Bookshare from a different wifi network just to see if maybe this is an issue with the network you're currently on somehow?

    K- 12

If the student is still receiving services from your organization such as taking adult education courses, you absolutely can leave them on your account. If not then they would need to complete their own Individual Membership, but please note that if the student is simply taking courses through another education facility they still absolutely qualify for free access to Bookshare. Any US student regardless of age or grade with a qualifying disability can access Bookshare for free.

    Can students download?

Hi Tammy, We have two levels for student memberships with Bookshare. When you add the student to your account it's first setup in the limited "Student Access" account type, also labeled "Organizational," and can only access content you assign to them. It's setup this way simply because Bookshare is a library with a wide range of content, so this allows you to ensure the students do not access things that you or their parents may find objectionable. However the students can absolutely upgrade this account to a full access "Individual membership" with Bookshare for free. They simply need to log into their existing account and select the upgrade link from the right side of their My Bookshare page. Please note if the students are under 18 they will need a parent or guardian to complete this form. In upgrading their account, the students are effectively are taking ownership of the account. You can still assign material to them through reading lists, and you can still view them on your roster but you will no longer have access to view their full activity on Bookshare nor will you have access to set or change their password. For account management assistance should they lose access to their Individual Membership the students or their parents or guardians would need to contact Bookshare support directly.

    Reading books with images

Hi Sharon, Images in our books aren't always present, this is true. But at this point the vast majority of our books we've added over the past few years do include images. We receive books largely through two methods, the vast majority now are provided to us by the publisher directly, but we do add several manually either through our incredible volunteers or our own in house book processing. Unfortunately only the books provided to us by the publishers will include images, the books our volunteers add or the books we do ourselves at this point we cannot retain images. When searching for a book look for the format "Daisy with Images," if this is available then we have images for the book. For instance another great children's picture book is A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee If you're interested we also have a great special collection of the top 100 picture books that we have done manually to ensure the best accessibility:

showing not logged in when logged in

Hey Hazen, Unfortunately this is a known issue. For cost savings we use the Amazon web services to host our books in Web Reader but still authenticate your account through our Bookshare servers. So since the cookie for your user information is to but your browser is trying to connect to the Amazon service your browser sees the cookie as a 3rd party cookie and with some setting configurations will actively block the cookie. Fixing the setting depends on your browser, but we have all of the steps available at:

    Speech Rate not working

Hi Cheryl, It sounds like an old web issue where sometimes browsers don't detect a click. Can you try setting the speed "bubble" to the location you would like to have it and click the mouse, or activate your screen reader one more time to see if it sticks the option at your desired point? Another option that may be worth a try is while the setting is where you'd like it try pressing tab on your keyboard until the Save button is selected and hit enter on your keyboard, see if that allows it to go through.

    New to bookshare

Hi Leslie, welcome to Bookshare! The note you're finding is intended for our non-US school organizations who need to purchase book blocks to access content on behalf of the members they support. To buy book blocks go to the Organization Information page on the left side of your My Bookshare page. If however you intended to create an account for your own personal use, or for your child, please give our support team a call so that we can make sure we get your account up and running with the right account type. I will say every once in a while we have members who accidentally create duplicate accounts, so it might be worth making sure you are logging into Bookshare with the correct account.

Hi Ellen, Any of our books that are just in Arabic can be downloaded in our BRF format, ready to be embossed. If a book has multiple languages unfortunately you will have to download the book in our text format, but this format can still be opened in most Braille translation applications such as Duxbury for embossing.

    Reading book offline on PC

Hey Karen, Unfortunately there isn't one easy answer, but there are a few depending on the student you are supporting. For our members with learning differences the Open Lore Read application is actually a great and inexpensive option. For our members with visual impairments there's a few options, if they use a screen reader the FS Reader that comes with JAWS can work great, as well as simply opening our books raw in a web browser. This is done by downloading the book in the DAISY Text format and simply opening the (title of the book).xml file directly. Note sometimes it's necessary to rename this file to .html before opening on some machines. In addition to these options, though a bit more expensive Kurzweil is also a great option for our members.

Help us make our books downloadable in ePub.

Hi Igor, We definitely would like to streamline the process for downloading ePubs. Thank you for the reinforcement however on the value it would add to our members!
  19. A member emailed this idea that we would like to gather more feedback on. We've modified the content slightly to broaden the scope of the discussion: Downloading large books including Bible translations such as: the New International Version, English Standard Version, the Ignatius Bible, and the King James Version as BRF files. Each book is in one very large file, which can be cumbersome at times. I was wondering if you could divide each large book into separate files because it would be easier to read it that way. Lastly, in Bibles the verses of each chapter of each book are clustered together, so I was wondering if you could perhaps separate each verse into individual lines and number them correctly.

    Define words

Hi Rachel, Many of our compatible applications do have this ability. If you're using the Bookshare Web Reader we recommend either Don Johnston's Snap and Read or Text Help's Read and Write for Google. Both are available as extensions in the Google Chrome browser. Many of the other compatible applications have this feature built into the app itself allowing you to select a word to find it's definition.

    Read2Go App is not working

Hi Nikki, Could you give our tech support a call at 650.352.0198 between 9am and 5pm? If the app is crashing at the point of download something strange is going on and it may be best to just work through the issue live. The only instance we've had with this prior is where someone is logged into the wrong account on the app, and that account is incomplete as Read2Go unfortunately doesn't always handle incomplete accounts as graceful as we would have liked, but if you're using the account I'm finding that should not be an issue.

    Read2Go App is not working

Hi Nikki, Unfortunately I'm not sure what might be causing this crashing. I do show 9.3.5 to be a stable platform for Read2Go at this time. Can you confirm for me when you're logging into Read2Go you're using your Bookshare account? If you're using another account can you try logging out of that account and into yours to test to make sure the account is setup correctly? Just to verify go to the settings of Read2go to check the email address that's logged into Bookshare.

    add book to booklist?

Hi Scrabble, You will need to ask your teacher to log into their Bookshare account and add this book to a reading list you've been assigned to. If they have not yet setup a reading list for you please have them follow the information at: How do I assign books to members so they can read them on their own?
