    Freely Available e-Books

Unfortunately, under current U.S. Copyright Law, Bookshare membership is only available to people who are certified by competent authorities as having qualifying reading barriers, such as blindness or low vision, learning disabilities, or physical disabilities that make it difficult or impossible to read standard print. (Learn more at https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center/how-do-i-know-if-my-student-qualifies and https://www.bookshare.org/cms/bookshare-me/who-qualifies.) We encourage you to sign up all students who meet these criteria. However, we have created a page that includes e-learning resources available from publishers and other vendors that can benefit a broader population: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center/learning-center/learning-at-home

    Signing up students

If a student is having trouble accessing their organizational membership account, please verify that they are using the login information that was assigned to them by a sponsor on the account. If they are still unable to log in, you can reset the password for them by clicking on the "edit" icon (the blue pencil) next to their name on your members list and then emailing them to let them know the new password. If a student is having trouble accessing their Individual Membership account, they can reach out to us for direct assistance at support@bookshare.org or by phone at 650-352-0198. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

    Definition Learning Disability

Under recently revised copyright law, an “eligible person” is one who: “is blind,” or “has a visual impairment or perceptual or reading disability” rendering them unable to read printed works “to substantially the same degree as a person without an impairment or disability,” or “is otherwise unable, through physical disability, to hold or manipulate a book or to focus or move the eyes to the extent that would be normally acceptable for reading,” Since Bookshare staff are not trained to assess and certify print disabilities—and many certifications rely on personal knowledge of the individual's situation—we must rely on the expertise of Competent Authorities to determine Bookshare eligibility. A Competent Authority is a person with a medical or special education background that is familiar with the disability, has access to the member’s medical records and can determine with confidence that the individual meets the eligibility requirements of copyright law. Common Competent Authorities include medical professionals, special education teachers, or psychologists. That is correct. All books in our Freely Available collection are without copyright restrictions and are therefore available to anyone regardless of whether they have a membership with Bookshare, or have a qualifying Print Disability.

    Definition Learning Disability

We do not require that you identify the specific diagnosis of a student in order to add them to an Organizational Account for a school. If a Competent Authority determines that a student's learning disability interferes with their ability to read standard print books, they can have them added to the account under the general disability type "LD." Can't find my students or assigned books.

Hello Lara, It sounds like you may be signing into a different account than the one that you used when you originally added your students. If you or another sponsor on the same account do not remove students and reading lists yourself, then they will not be automatically removed by the system so they should still be listed on the account. Please feel free to contact Customer Support directly so that we can investigate your situation more thoroughly. You can email us at support@bookshare.org or call us for direct assistance at 650-352-0198. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

    Need little help

Hello Ray, Unfortunately not all of our titles will have images or image descriptions. We try to upload everything in the title, but it is not always feasible to include the images. If a book is in our collection without images and you feel that it requires those images in order for the information to be understood, you can file a book Quality report to our Collection Development team. To file a book quality report: 1. Log in to your Bookshare account at: https://www.bookshare.org/ 2. Locate the book. 3. Select the Book's Title. 4. Select the Report Book Quality Issue link. If you choose the option to be notified, you will receive an email from the Collection Development Department when an update is available.

Math text illustrations not showing up

Many of our books do not contain images. You can check if the book you are interested in contains images when logged into your account and searching on our website. If the book does contain images, then they will be available when you view them in the Web Reader or download them in the file formats EPUB, DAISY with images, and Word. If you wish to access the book using an app, then we recommend using Voice Dream Reader for best image support. If you feel that a book requires images in order for the content to be understood, you can submit a book quality report for that particular book to request that images be retained on a new version of that book. 1. Log in to your Bookshare account at: https://www.bookshare.org/ 2. Locate the book. 3. Select the Book's Title. 4. Select the Report Book Quality Issue link. If you choose the option to be notified, you will receive an email from the Collection Development Department when an update is available.

    reMarkable Tablet

Hello Heather, According to the reMarkable website, https://support.remarkable.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002658737-Ebooks, they can support ebooks that are in EPUB format. Bookshare books can be downloaded in an EPUB format to your computer. If you are able to use the reMarkable desktop app to transfer the EPUB files downloaded from the Bookshare website, you should be able to transfer Bookshare books to your reMarkable tablet device. If you would like assistance downloading a book in EPUB, please feel free to contact Bookshare customer support at support@bookshare.org. I would then recommend contacting reMarkable tech support for assistance with the process of transferring EPUB files to your device, as the Bookshare tech support team does not provide support for this device at this time.

    Decodable books

Hello Ali, If you search for the phrase "decodable readers" in the search bar on our website, you will find some books in our collection that include that in their title. If you are using the Bookshare Web Reader, you can also download the browser extension called "BeeLine Reader" to access a font specifically designed for dyslexic readers.

    Returning books??

Hello Ashley, No, there is no need or ability on our website to return the books you download. You can continue to access them using our Web Reader for as long as your subscription is active and any files that you have downloaded will remain in your device unless you choose to delete them.
