  1. Hello Gerry,

  2. Hello Robin,

You can always check the members list for your organization to see if the students on your roster have been added yet. If not, please reach out to customer support directly for confirmation. You can email us at membership@bookshare.org or call us at 650-352-0198 option 1 for membership. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

  3. Hello Ali,

If you search for the phrase "decodable readers" in the search bar on our website, you will find some books in our collection that include that in their title.

If you are using the Bookshare Web Reader, you can also download the browser extension called "BeeLine Reader" to access a font specifically designed for dyslexic readers.

  4. Hello Ashley,

No, there is no need or ability on our website to return the books you download. You can continue to access them using our Web Reader for as long as your subscription is active and any files that you have downloaded will remain in your device unless you choose to delete them.

  5. Hello Karen,

To search for a book in Voice Dream Reader:

    1. From Voice Dream Reader’s main screen, tap on Add button, the “+" icon, in the top left corner
    2. Tap on “Bookshare”

To search for a specific book, tap on the search box at the top of the window. Otherwise, choose a category from the list.

To download a book, tap on the Download button next to its title.

The book you download will then appear on the app's home menu under "all items." You can select the book from the home menu and press the play button to begin the audio.

If these instructions are not sufficient, please feel free to call us for direct assistance at 650-352-0198 option 2 for tech support. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

  6. Hello Nikki,

Bookshare is fully active all year long, and assigned books do not expire. If this student has an Individual Membership account, then the parent might be referring to the subscription renewal date. If the subscription on an account expires, then it does need to be renewed before the member can continue to access books.

Please feel free to reach out to our customer support team for more information either by email at membership@bookshare.org or by phone at 650-352-0198 option 1 for membership. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

  7. Hello Max,

Unfortunately, the Activation ID cannot be added to an account after it has been created. The field for the Activation ID appears in the second question of the sign up process where it asks if the member is a student. The third radio button for the question says "I have an Activation ID." When you select that radio button, a field appears for you to input the Activation ID.

If you wish the account you created for your son to be linked to an Organizational Account, you can ask a sponsor for that organization to link his existing Individual Membership Account to their organization using the email address associated with his account. You can also reach out to membership@bookshare.org to request that the account you already created be deleted and then recreate it using the Activation ID.

  8. Hello Mike,

You can see any reading lists shared within your organization from your "my reading lists" page when signed into your sponsor account. On that page, there is a "subscribe" button next to the "create" button at the bottom of the list of reading lists that you have created. When you click that button, a pop up window will appear where you will see all reading lists that are available for you to subscribe to. If you wish to see only the reading lists created by other sponsors at your organization, you can use the drop down menu at the top of that pop up window that allows you to filter out all public lists.

There is an instructional video that explains this in detail available on your "my reading lists" page as well. It is located on the left hand side of the page under the "learn more" heading.

  9. Hello Manda,

All of our books are available in an audio format. There are a number of ways that your students can access the books that you assign to them. You can find more information about how your students can access them here: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center/educators-get-started-page-4

Please feel free to contact Bookshare Customer support with any follow up questions or for more information. You can email us at membership@bookshare.org or call 650-352-0198 option 1 for membership. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

  10. Hello,

Sponsors can download books on behalf of their members, but they do not have access to the Bookshare Web Reader. In order to download a book that you have assigned to a member, please follow the steps below:

    1. Log into your sponsor account.

    2. Find the book you would like to access either in "reading lists" or by using the search bar at the top of the page.

    3. Click on the "Download" button located in the "Action" column for the book you wish to download.

    4. On the next page, check the box next to the name(s) of the member(s) for whom you wish to download the book and choose the file format you would like it to be downloaded in from the drop down menu in the last column.

    5. Click the blue "Prepare Books" button and then click "Confirm" in the pop up window.

    6. On the following page, wait for the loading symbol in the "status" column for the book to change to the word "Available." When this word appears, click on it to download the book to your computer.

  11. Hello,

There could be a number of reasons for the difficulty you are experiencing. Please reach out to customer support directly so that we can help you figure out the particular issue.

You can email us at membership@bookshare.org or call 650-352-0198 option 1 for membership. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

  12. Hello Mary,

You can download a book in the "Audio" file format while connected to the internet and then you will be able to access the file that you already downloaded when not connected to the internet. The audio will be in MP3 file format.

  13. Hello Linda,

When you see the message that a sponsor's email is already in use, that means that the teacher in question either created an account on their own, or is already on someone else's account. You can either add them to your account using a different email, or you can ask them to contact Bookshare Customer Support to request they be removed from the account they are currently on. Once removed you will be able to add them to your account with the email that is currently in use.

Our phones are open from 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday: 650-352-0198 option 1 for membership

    Our email address: membership@bookshare.org

  14. No, your student and their parents will not be charged any fee if you expand their Organizational Membership Account into a Linked Individual Membership Account.

Bookshare services are free for qualified U.S. students of any age and to schools in the U.S. through an award from OSEP (Office of Special Education Programs, U.S. Department of Education).

  15. Hello Susan,

All titles in our collection are available in both text and audio formats. We do not have human read audio for our collection, but our texts can be read by a number of different artificial voices depending on how you choose to access them. Bookshare has chosen to produce digital text for the benefits of rapid production of accessible books, so that Members can obtain accessible books as quickly as possible.

For more information about your options for accessing Bookshare books, please visit this page on our website: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/reading-tool-wizard

  17. Hello Gabe!

Yes, you can change the rate of speech on most apps that integrate with Bookshare. Depending on the app you are using, there are different ways to access audio settings. I recommend that you first search our help center for articles about the app that you are using and, if you are unable to find specific instructions regarding accessing the audio settings for that app, you can contact our Customer Support team for more direct assistance.

Here is a direct link to our help center: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center

You can contact customer support via email at: support@bookshare.org

Our phones are open from 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday: (650) 352-0198

  18. Susan is absolutely correct. Students are not required to have either an IEP or a 504 plan in order to have a Bookshare account. As long as the student has a qualifying Print Disability and a Competent Authority is able to verify it, they can be added to an Organizational Account or have an Individual Membership Account created for them.

For more information about qualifying Print Disabilities and who can serve as a Competent Authority, please visit this page on our website: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/bookshare-me/who-qualifies
