    parent letter

Hello Nadine, While we do not have a specific letter designed for this purpose, there are a number of helpful resources on our Learning Center including videos demonstrating different ways to access Bookshare books: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center/learning-center
  3. Hello Joellen, Bookshare must abide by an amendment to copyright law called the Marrakesh agreement, which allows us to distribute copyrighted materials to only qualifying individuals. The guidelines listed on this page of our website come directly from the language of copyright law: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/bookshare-me/who-qualifies . Unfortunately, ADHD is not considered a qualifying print disability under current law. However, it is quite possible that a person with one or more of these disabilities would qualify for Bookshare because of an accompanying disability. For example, a person who is both deaf and blind, or who has ADHD and a reading disability that impacts their ability to effectively read printed works, could qualify.

Saving books, with highlighting, for the future

Hello Catherine, If you are interested in marking up a text and having the text to speech available at the same time, I would recommend downloading your books from Bookshare in the EPUB format and reading them in an EPUB reader such as Apple Books (comes automatically on all Apple devices) or Thorium Reader (Free for download on the Microsoft app store for Windows computers). Both of these programs have bookmarking options available where you can highlight a part of the text to bookmark it in order to return to that section at any time. They both also have text to speech audio available. If you are interested in exploring other options, please feel free to browse different reading tools that you can use to read Bookshare books on this page of our website: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/reading-tool-wizard

Save settings in Web Reader between sessions

Hello Jennifer, As long as your student is using the same browser on the same device, the Web Reader should automatically save the settings that your student has chosen and they should not have to reset them each time. Please feel free to have your student or a parent/guardian of your student contact our customer support team for direct assistance with this issue. You can call us at 650-352-0198 or email us at support@bookshare.org.

    Bookmark

Hello Leslie, Unfortunately, the Bookshare Web Reader does not have a built in bookmarking feature at this time. Many members use the table of contents button to help them navigate back to the portion of the book that they were last reading. If your student is willing to try a different reading program, Thorium is a free EPUB reader available in the Microsoft app store, which has a bookmarking feature and text to speech audio similar to the Web Reader. Your student can download Bookshare books in the EPUB file format and read them in the Thorium program. You can learn more about Thorium here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/thorium-reader/9nfzp1g7m2sc?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

    No Access

Hello Aldan, I am sorry for the unfortunate timing of your subscription renewal. Bookshare receives government funding from the Office of Special Education Programs that allows us to make our services available for free to qualifying US students. Because this funding comes from the federal government, we are regularly audited to ensure that there is no fraudulent activity and only qualifying US students are using those free student subscriptions. In order to continue receiving this funding, we have to follow certain security protocols, which includes a member of our team reviewing any student subscription renewals if the student information on the account has been updated.

Individual Acct access to text books

Hello Tracie, Individual Membership accounts do have access to most textbooks in our collection once they have been completed. The only exception is that NIMAC-sourced titles will not be accessible to a member using an unlinked Individual Membership account, because those books must always be assigned by a sponsor in order for them to be accessed by a member. If this student would like to continue using their Individual Membership account, you can link it to your organization so that you, or another sponsor can assign them their text books by following these steps: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center/how-can-i-link-my-students-existing-individual-account-my-organizational-account

    Logging into on Read2Go app

Hi Cheyenne, There is a possibility that in this case, your student may not be entering the correct login information. Please feel free to have your student, or a parent/guardian of the student contact Customer Support to make sure that they are using the correct login information. Read2Go has been out of development for some time now, which means it is no longer receiving updates. Although it still works fairly well for members who wish to keep using it, it is possible with every update to iOS, will bring more potential glitches to the app. If you find this happening more often than not, we recommend switching to another app such as Voice Dream Reader or Dolphin EasyReader. These are third-party apps, which integrate with Bookshare, and are regularly updated.

    "login failed" on IOS devises

When using a mobile device to access Bookshare, we generally recommend using an app instead of the mobile version of our website for a better user experience. If you find this happening more often than not, we recommend using an app such as Voice Dream Reader or Dolphin EasyReader. These are third-party apps, which integrate with Bookshare. If you would prefer to use the mobile version of the Bookshare website, or would like assistance troubleshooting this issue, please feel free to contact Bookshare Customer Support at support@bookshare.org or by phone at 650-352-0198.

Five Carat Soul by James McBride

Hello Clark, In the Bookshare Web Reader, there is a save button at the bottom of the settings window that must be pressed in order for your changes to be made. If you are not able to view or press that save button, you may need to zoom out in your browser to see the full window.

    Pre reading before assigning?

Hello, Sponsor accounts are used by staff members who have been added to Organizational Accounts. If your organization has an account with Bookshare, you can reach out to the person running that account to ask to be added so that you will have your own sponsor account. If your organization does not yet have an account with Bookshare, then you can sign up for an Organizational Account on our website and you will then have sponsor access as the Primary Contact who created the account.

    web reader

At this time, the Bookshare web reader does not have the option to change the highlighting color individually. The color of the highlight depends on the text and background color setting you have chosen. Some other reading tools do have the option to customize the highlighting. You can customize the highlighting color when reading in Captivoice, and when using the apps Dolphin EasyReader and Voice Dream Reader.

    Pre reading before assigning?

Hello, Sponsors can download books on behalf of their members in order to view the books themselves, but they do not have access to the Bookshare Web Reader. In order to download a book from your sponsor account, please follow the steps below: 1. Log into your sponsor account. 2. Find the book you would like to access either in "reading lists" or by using the search bar at the top of the page. 3. Click on the "Download" button located in the "Action" column for the book you wish to download. 4. On the next page, check the box next to the name(s) of the member(s) for whom you wish to download the book and choose the file format you would like it to be downloaded in from the drop down menu in the last column. (We recommend downloading the book in either EPUB or Word, as most devices have programs that can read files in these formats) 5. Click the blue "Prepare Books" button and then click "Confirm" in the pop up window. 6. On the following page, wait for the loading symbol in the "status" column for the book to change to the word "Available." When this word appears, click on it to download the book to your computer.
