    how do i renew membership?

Hello Pamela, All our Individual Membership accounts operate on a yearly subscription basis. You do not need to resubmit Proof of Disability once your account has been updated, but you do need to renew your membership by activating a new subscription every year. To renew your membership please follow these steps: 1. Log in to Bookshare. 2. From the account status banner on your My Bookshare page, select the "Renew" link. 3. Select the appropriate radio button and the Continue button. 4. Update any of your school information that has changed. If your student information is the same leave as is. 5. If you edited anything, select the check box to certify that it's correct. 6. Submit the information and you're done! Typically your membership will be renewed the next time you log in. It can, however, take a few days to go through, especially if your grade level stayed the same, you advanced multiple grades, or you changed schools.

    Adding student to roster

Hi Kathleen, If your student has an Individual Membership account, then we can unlink his account from his elementary school and link it yours so that you can assign him books. If he had an Organizational Account, then he would need to be removed from his previous schools account by a sponsor for that school before you could reuse his username. In the mean time, you can add him to your organization's account and assign him a different username so that he can begin accessing books. I would recommend reaching out to Customer Support for assistance in finding out what type of accounts he currently has and determining the next best steps. Please feel free to call us at 650-352-0198 or email at support@bookshare.org.

Web reader on Chromebook stopping spontaneously

Hello Amber, These issues persist even after trying another voice option, it could be resulting from another installed Chrome extension is interfering with Web Reader's text-to-speech. You can disable your extensions, test your Web Reader to see if the audio sounds better, and then re-enable your extensions one-by-one to see which stops the text-to-speech from working. 1. Type chrome://extensions into the address bar within Chrome 2. Remove the check next to "Enable" for any extensions that are not Google and may be interfering. 3. Return to Booksahre and open your book again using the Read Now link. If your students continue to have problems after trying these troubleshooting options, or you think it would be simpler to direct them to another service, you could try setting up accounts for them on another ebook reader called Capti Voice. This reader service integrates with Bookshare so that members can access and search the Bookshare library within the Capti Voice reader. You can learn more about this option on this page of our website: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/getting-started-capti-voice-online

Hello Jake, We sometimes have multiple versions of the same book in our collection with different types of access. For the book you are referencing, there is another version that is available in the Web Reader. Here is the direct link to that version of the book: https://www.bookshare.org/browse/book/339847 In general, however, if a book in our collection is not available in the Web Reader and there is not another version that is, you can download the book to your device in any of the available file formats to read it using your ebook reading program of choice such as Capti Voice or Thorium Reader.

Web reader on Chromebook stopping spontaneously

Hello Kate, We have had reports from many of our members that, after a recent Chromebook update, there have been problems with using the Web Reader. Our engineering team is aware of the issue and we hope to have it resolved soon. In the mean time, we have found that many members are able to avoid the problem by using a different voice. The Chrome OS US English Female HQ voice seems to have the most problems resulting from the update at this time. If you use a default voice for the device instead, or purchase an Acapela voice from the Chrome Web Store, you should not encounter the same issue.

    Freely Available e-Books

Unfortunately, under current U.S. Copyright Law, Bookshare membership is only available to people who are certified by competent authorities as having qualifying reading barriers, such as blindness or low vision, learning disabilities, or physical disabilities that make it difficult or impossible to read standard print. (Learn more at https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center/how-do-i-know-if-my-student-qualifies and https://www.bookshare.org/cms/bookshare-me/who-qualifies.) We encourage you to sign up all students who meet these criteria. However, we have created a page that includes e-learning resources available from publishers and other vendors that can benefit a broader population: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/help-center/learning-center/learning-at-home

Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

    Definition Learning Disability

Under recently revised copyright law, an “eligible person” is one who: “is blind,” or “has a visual impairment or perceptual or reading disability” rendering them unable to read printed works “to substantially the same degree as a person without an impairment or disability,” or “is otherwise unable, through physical disability, to hold or manipulate a book or to focus or move the eyes to the extent that would be normally acceptable for reading,” Since Bookshare staff are not trained to assess and certify print disabilities—and many certifications rely on personal knowledge of the individual's situation—we must rely on the expertise of Competent Authorities to determine Bookshare eligibility. A Competent Authority is a person with a medical or special education background that is familiar with the disability, has access to the member’s medical records and can determine with confidence that the individual meets the eligibility requirements of copyright law. Common Competent Authorities include medical professionals, special education teachers, or psychologists. Freely Available e-Books

That is correct. All books in our Freely Available collection are without copyright restrictions and are therefore available to anyone regardless of whether they have a membership with Bookshare, or have a qualifying Print Disability.

    Definition Learning Disability

We do not require that you identify the specific diagnosis of a student in order to add them to an Organizational Account for a school. If a Competent Authority determines that a student's learning disability interferes with their ability to read standard print books, they can have them added to the account under the general disability type "LD." Can't find my students or assigned books.

Hello Lara, It sounds like you may be signing into a different account than the one that you used when you originally added your students. If you or another sponsor on the same account do not remove students and reading lists yourself, then they will not be automatically removed by the system so they should still be listed on the account. Please feel free to contact Customer Support directly so that we can investigate your situation more thoroughly. You can email us at support@bookshare.org or call us for direct assistance at 650-352-0198. Our normal hours are 9am to 5pm PST, Monday through Friday.

    Need little help

Hello Ray, Unfortunately not all of our titles will have images or image descriptions. We try to upload everything in the title, but it is not always feasible to include the images. If a book is in our collection without images and you feel that it requires those images in order for the information to be understood, you can file a book Quality report to our Collection Development team. To file a book quality report: 1. Log in to your Bookshare account at: https://www.bookshare.org/ 2. Locate the book. 3. Select the Book's Title. 4. Select the Report Book Quality Issue link. If you choose the option to be notified, you will receive an email from the Collection Development Department when an update is available.

Math text illustrations not showing up

Many of our books do not contain images. You can check if the book you are interested in contains images when logged into your account and searching on our website. If the book does contain images, then they will be available when you view them in the Web Reader or download them in the file formats EPUB, DAISY with images, and Word. If you wish to access the book using an app, then we recommend using Voice Dream Reader for best image support. If you feel that a book requires images in order for the content to be understood, you can submit a book quality report for that particular book to request that images be retained on a new version of that book. 1. Log in to your Bookshare account at: https://www.bookshare.org/ 2. Locate the book. 3. Select the Book's Title. 4. Select the Report Book Quality Issue link. If you choose the option to be notified, you will receive an email from the Collection Development Department when an update is available.

If you are using the Bookshare Web Reader, you can also download the browser extension called "BeeLine Reader" to access a font specifically designed for dyslexic readers.

Hello Ashley, No, there is no need or ability on our website to return the books you download. You can continue to access them using our Web Reader for as long as your subscription is active and any files that you have downloaded will remain in your device unless you choose to delete them.

Hello Nikki, Bookshare is fully active all year long, and assigned books do not expire. If the subscription on an account expires, then it does need to be renewed before the member can continue to access books. Please feel free to reach out to our customer support team for more information either by email at membership@bookshare.org or by phone at 650-352-0198 option 1 for membership. Activation ID

Hello Max, Unfortunately, the Activation ID cannot be added to an account after it has been created. The field for the Activation ID appears in the second question of the sign up process where it asks if the member is a student. The third radio button for the question says "I have an Activation ID." When you select that radio button, a field appears for you to input the Activation ID. If you wish the account you created for your son to be linked to an Organizational Account, you can ask a sponsor for that organization to link his existing Individual Membership Account to their organization using the email address associated with his account. You can also reach out to membership@bookshare.org to request that the account you already created be deleted and then recreate it using the Activation ID.

    Accessing Organization's Reading lists

Hello Mike, You can see any reading lists shared within your organization from your "my reading lists" page when signed into your sponsor account. On that page, there is a "subscribe" button next to the "create" button at the bottom of the list of reading lists that you have created. When you click that button, a pop up window will appear where you will see all reading lists that are available for you to subscribe to. If you wish to see only the reading lists created by other sponsors at your organization, you can use the drop down menu at the top of that pop up window that allows you to filter out all public lists. There is an instructional video that explains this in detail available on your "my reading lists" page as well. It is located on the left hand side of the page under the "learn more" heading.
