Hello,

I just got my son (11) all signed up, approved and ready to go. We tried the web based reading and he hated it. Is there a way to toggle off the [image: description] while reading. All that extra is confusing him so much. He is already struggling with comprehension and the book going off topic to read the image description is just throwing him for a loop.

Thank you,

Jen

Hi Jen,

Welcome to Bookshare!  The good news and bad news is that tag is not found in most of our books.  We have several initiatives underway to better make images accessible to our users including at least three different ways image descriptions, the ones with the brackets as you describe are usually manual descriptions added by our volunteers that appear in the raw text of the book, and unfortunately those cannot be disabled at this time.

Most of the other image description options will be invisible in the web reader, only read aloud when the audio is enabled or accessed by a screen reader.  We do have a special collection that he might enjoy, the top 100 picture books.  They all do have image descriptions but the descriptions are invisible, only read by the audio: https://www.bookshare.org/browse/collection/50/Top

Hi Nick,

So the image description will be read in all books when he is using the text to speech within his app? At this point he needs all of his books read to him.

Thanks,

Jen

Only for the books that have image descriptions, which at this point is only a tiny portion of our library.  In the very near future we're hoping to find ways to both increase the number of descriptions available to our members and include an option to allow members to skip the descriptions if they so choose.
